Mort Sahl was honored at the Wadsworth Theatre on June 28 -- for his 80th birthday, and for his incredible influence on an entire generation of now-famous comedians and actors. Bill Maher, Albert Brooks, Woody Allen (on tape), Drew Carey, Richard Lewis, Kevin Nealon, Harry Shearer, Paula Poundstone and Jay Leno all paid tribute to Mort, and Jack Riley (comic actor best known for his TV role on "Newhart") played amiable MC. Those who came onstage live at this Sahlapalooza had the audience in near-constant hysterics. Leno in particular was in top form - delivering one of the biggest laughs of the night (telling the audience that Mel Gibson's uncle actually died in a concentration camp -- got drunk and fell out of the guard tower), and closing his set with heartfelt words of praise about Mr. Sahl. Other comics of Sahl's generation also paid tribute, including Shelley Berman, Norm Crosby, and Don Rickles (on tape). It truly was an amazing night of comedy, with a lineup of funnymen that will be hard to top for some time to come. The evening was a benefit for the Heartland Comedy Foundation, which raises funds for comedians who are struggling financially; more info at www.heartlandcomedyfoundation.net. --Don Rose
Re-Elect Gore - or at least Buy His New Book - The "Re-Elect Gore" signs were on display, as were letters being signed to show support for a Draft Gore movement, at the Writers Bloc event May 22 in Beverly Hills - which featured Harry Shearer ("Not Enough Indians" author, Le Show radio host, Simpsons VO god and yadda yadda yadda his resume is too long!) talking with the former Veep (Al Gore's new book "The Assault on Reason" is just coming out). Gore and Shearer hung around after the main event, signing books and posing for the occasional photo. (Next event in the Writers Bloc series: May 25, famed novelist Elmore Leonard chats with legendary producer Walter Mirisch - info at www.writersblocpresents.com - see this site for all their stellar events.) --Don Rose Solar-powered backpacks? Soft robes made from bamboo? Free mini massages and facials? A talk by the visionary head of Stonybrook Farms? Meditation and musings with Lou Reed? A tote bag made from recycled furniture upholstery? It could only be one conference, and that conference is LOHAS. Full Review.
Disney threw a fun bash for the press at the Highlands nightclub/eatery May 14, to celebrate and promote the May 22 launch of Blu-Ray high definition DVDs for Pirates of the Caribbean 1 and 2 -- perfectly timed, of course, for the coming box office juggernaut called Pirates 3 (we cant wait to see Pirate Keef, aka Keith Richard). But back to the party: lots of media folks attended, including Thomas Arnold from Home Media Retailing magazine (HMR's excellent annual summer DVD conference is coming this June, see our Events section). Pirates Lee Arenberg (Pintel) and Martin Klebba (Marty) from the film were there, as were several Disney execs, and even Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer took time out of his superbusy sched to show up and take in the festivities, which included a fun multisensory atmosphere (example: a Narnia-and-snow-themed mini-set to walk through and imbibe a lemony drink on the way to the main party), and everpresent DVD clips in brilliant clarity on hi def flat screen TVs all over the restaurant. Of course, guests were also treated to plenty of great grub (including fried rice, pork and ham sandwiches, plenty of plaintains, guacamole, chicken skewers, popcorn shrimp, and delectable desserts). The highlight of the merriment to me, besides the 2 caricature artists and 2 fortune tellers (palm and Tarot), was playing the Liar's Dice game, right from the DVD -- a blending of short live action movie-based clips with graphics as you play the dice-based game against the film's pirates (kind of like a variant of poker with dice instead of cards - you bet on how many die are face-up with X number of dots in both your "hand" and your pirate opponent's "hand" -- and you can call your opponent a Liar if you think he is guessing or just plain wrong - and don't worry, if it sounds hard there are live action rules recited by the pirates to get you up to speed). The game uses BD-Java technology as well as Artificial Intelligence (AI-driven randomization) which they claim allows "a countless multitude of gameplay results" and "intelligent reactions" that give a level of gameplay never achievable before Blu-Ray. Well, hey, with 75 GB to work with (50 GB on disc1 and 25 on disc2, in each film's 2-disc package), one would expect a vast increase in the number of scenarios one can experience on a Blu Ray DVD game. (Special thanks to mPRm public relations for their assistance on this event.) --Don Rose
The annual confab put on by Always On called OnHollywood was held at the Roosevelt Hotel the first week of May. Logline: tech meets entertainment meets the future. The large crowd at the opening party May 1, who enjoyed poolside open bar and networking, included the head of AlwaysOn, Tony Perkins, talk show host Carson Daly (I still miss my daily Carson, as in Johnny -- but with a name like Carson, is Daly destined to host The Tonight Show?), Amanda Congdon (once hot host of cool vlog RocketBoom, now even hotter MSM-er at ABC News), blogger Lisa Padilla of BlogTalkRadio.com and many more technorati. --Don Rose
Jan 26-28 was the 22nd annual Los Angeles Fine Print Fair, put on as always by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art atop LACMA West. Jan 26 was their excellent opening reception, which featured a preview of the print fair exhibitors, who came from across the nation (The LA Report especially liked the USF booth - apparently the University of South Florida is a hotbed for creativity these days - the Shapes Project is particularly intriguing) -- and guests also enjoyed smooth jazz, wine and appetizers from Patina on the outdoor heat-lamped rooftop patio overlooking the city. Definitely recommended for 2008. www.lacma.org --Don Rose
ART LA's Jan 25 exhibit preview and reception at the Santa Monica Civic benefited MOCA Contemporaries, had great energy, and featured top art all around the auditorium, in dozens of booths with a wide range of wonders - even performance art (such as: man in glass booth chopping wood and glass, another person in nearby booth in fetal floor position, guests eagerly examining both). The numerous gala goers (including Gerald Casale of Devo) could also enjoy Absolut drinks, and a mini food court with booths featuring Reed's excellent drinks (root beer, ginger beer, cream soda), milk from (yes) a place called Milk, Krispy Kreme donuts, chocolate cookies and brownies from another place (I am too sugar high to remember right now, give me a minute), and crepes by Acadie -- maybe their name should be Pinkadie because, like LA faves Pink's and Pinkberry, which are also superpopular, Acadie's creations have so many fans they always create a queue to quench their quest for crepes. Another plus at the show: a great assortment of art mags to pick up, like Artillery, Coagula, and Make magazine (we are big Make fans at The LA Report), and Machine Project's fine publications. Rating: Art LA gets a gigantic "GO"! www.artfairsinc.com --Don Rose
One of The LA Report's favorite annual events, the LA Art Show was bigger than ever this year. At the opening gala Jan 24 the packed house at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica filled every corner of the expanded space. The gala benefited LACMA and featured a delightful assortment of both art (Chuck Close portraits up close were faves) and food (from sushi to trout mousse to croissant sandwiches to samosas) from local eateries (Border Grill, Ocean Avenue and a dozen more) as well as Absolut cocktails, Evian water and POM's wonderful iced teas (POMegranate based, for max antioxidant goodness). The animated crowd included celebs such as Albert Brooks, Kevin Bacon, and (I was told) Barbra Streisand and hubby James Brolin. If you missed the gala, on Friday-Sunday you could always feast on all the art, which was after all the main dish. laartshow.com --Don Rose
David, Donovan: Double Delight: David Lynch - filmmaker icon with the Velvet (and often vexing) touch - joined UK folk-pop legend Donovan to end their US tour with stellar performances on January 21. First Lynch answered questions (read by actress Laura Dern) from the large Kodak Theatre audience, echoing themes and ideas in his new hardcover book, Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness and Creativity. Donovan then took over with a fun, often hypnotic poetic set of songs that covered nearly all of his many hits, closing with "Mellow Yellow" (backed by daughter Astrella - a talented singer in her own right who joined dad for a few numbers during the show - and Beach Boy Mike Love, who, as Donovan pointed out in one of his amusing anecdotes, went with the Sunshine Superman and the Beatles to study TM with Maharishi in India in 1967). TM, of course, stands not only for TradeMark but Transcendental Meditation, a practice Lynch and Donovan share a passion for. Signs at the free show said PBS was filming, so look for this enlightening night on TV soon. -Don Rose
Jan 18-21: the colossal annual NAMM show returned to the Anaheim Convention Center; still the biggest music confab I've ever seen - everything from High School band equipment to sheet music to guitars, pianos, keyboards, hardware, software and everything in between. Also known for celeb signings and performances at the booths, plus great parties and shows at night. Highlights: iCOUSTICS, acoustic-electric guitars with speakers built into the sound hole so you can play without an amp, and play along with other sounds piped into your guitar via iPod or other instruments... RMS acoustic amp with sleek design (see below) and SIERRA guitars, from Musicorp -- stylish products, well made, lots of features, good price points (www.musicorp.com)... A new type of guitar capo that allows creation of new chords, since it effectively plays the bar chord for you (plus, turn it around and it's a regular capo -- two products in one!)... the very good VG line of Stratocaster electric guitars (from Fender and Roland) that lets you mimic many kinds of amp sound profiles, all from within the guitar (just plug it in, no extra boxes or wires needed to get the effects)... HotHand, a box allowing "tremelo in the air", just wave your strumming hand in the air after hitting a chord and you get the effect you normally get from that little silver wand on electric guitars -- surf guitar legend Dick Dale showed it off for onlookers... Piano Wizard, great learning software (Guitar Wizard comes later in 07)... and Peavey touted their TransTube amps -- true tube feel from a solid state (tubeless) product (I've been a Peavey fan for years). Stevie Wonder, Laurence Juber and Dale were among the many music stars who came to perform or peruse during the four day expo. -Don Rose
Jan 18-21: PHOTO LA returned to Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. An amazing amalgam of exhibits from around the world. Fans of G'Day LA week could visit the Queensland booth at the show. Or Ace Gallery, for the biggest headshots you've ever seen, and lightboxes by a fave of The LA Report, Melanie Pullen. There were dozens more artists and galleries, for every taste and price range. The Jan. 18 opening benefit ($100, to benefit the Elton John Aids Foundation) was hosted by Graham Nash (you know, of Hollies-CSNY fame), and in addition to a preview of the exhibits, guests feasted on delicious delights from local eateries such as Casablanca (best calamari steak I've ever tasted), Chaya (tartar fare and chicken salad), Malo (a gourmet chicken enchilada concoction), Border Grill (a Santa Monica gem for years), Reed's ginger beer, root beer and cream soda, and of course Krispy Kreme, sugar.
The Showtime and Friends In High Places pre-GoldenGlobes house in Hancock Park made for a charming sunny afternoon as celebs, VIPs and press visited a wide ranging array of booths -- including ShaDang clothing (from Tai Chi Master and fashion designer Rafi Anteby), Epitome salon (which features bed or spray tanning), American Medical Aesthetics (which treated guests to onsite treatments), Bora Bora health bars, Daily Detox tea, Froid iced-coffee-style drinks, Roosevelt Lofts promoting their new LA property (and auctioning a 1 year lease to one lucky celeb), food creations from The Boulevard restaurant and Sushi Girl, eye-popping dresses from Single, Make A Wish auctioning art for their great cause, Hendrix Vodka libations and Mojito Island cocktails -- plus massage, hair styling, meditative healing, product gifting, and much more. Friends In High Places events are highly recommended by The LA Report. ---Don Rose
"I'm in GRIDLOCK" used to be best known as an automotive phrase, but those in the know in LA know it really means you're with LA's coolest and hippest at the massive New Years Eve party on the Paramount backlot. Gridlock was arguably the biggest bash of NYE (in terms of number of people attending -- an estimated 6000 -- and sheer scope). Set on Paramount's New York Streets, the party was smokin'. Various vendors kept partiers' stomachs full with pizza and other excellent edibles, while Starbucks had a fun booth where you could sample their tasty Peppermint hot chocolate as well as coffee AND take home a free customize-your-own-Tumbler Kit. DJs entertained throughout the night, while The Killers rocked the lot after midnight (heck, it was like a New Years party and concert rolled into one). The VIP room was constantly buzzing -- featuring open bar, superb catered food (I loved the seasoned potatoes), an acrobatic performer dazzling partygoers from above, and a merry mix of fashionistas and celebs including event host Carmen Electra, Stuff Magazine covergirl Dominique Swain, Bai Ling, and many others. Overall, twas an excellent night, filled with delights and sensuous sights. Highly recommended for next year.
The DASK New Years Eve party was extremely well attended, turning the rooftop area of the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel (and the adjacent top floor of the Kodak complex) into a sea of beautiful people and performers (who achieved A-plus aerial acrobatics -- at times mesmerizing to watch in the vast ballroom). The DASK folks promised excellent food catered by Wolfgang Puck, and they hit a home run on that score -- guests enjoyed numerous food stations featuring almost every style of gourmet food you could imagine. Highlights included salmon, fried rice, grilled chicken, Asian salad, and a signature Puck chocolate creation that is a decadent dessert worth deserting your diet for. A feast for the senses, this bash was, and since their summer party was also a smash success, The LA Report heartily recommends all of DASK's upcoming offerings for 2007. Stay tuned.
VANITY Cosmetics Launch at Techna: Techna Studio, in Sherman Oaks (on Ventura, between Allot and Ventura Canyon, just east of Woodman), was the setting for a fun fashion show and party featuring Vanity Cosmetics (their official opening, in tandem with Vanity Boutique -- a great shop with a variety of chic items for men and women, a couple doors west of Techna). Fine wine flowed, and Boneyard Bistro kept bringing guests wonderful appetizers (including smoked salmon bruchetta, ahi tuna, and my first ever tasting of what could be called a "mac and cheese cake", a lightly-breaded square concoction that I am now craving the next morning, it was so good!) -- and let's not forget dessert: cupcakes were provided by Leda's Bake Shop. A couple hundred people -- a good mix with great energy -- came in during the evening. Remember this little section of the huge boulevard called Ventura; it is buzzing with activity, with some great shops -- and across the street is FreakBeat Records, featuring good tunes aplenty and a fun store window display. This block's a hot spot not to be forgot. -Don Rose
BEAUJOLAIS AND BEYOND FESTIVAL: Hollywood Palladium was the location for the largest event on the West Coast to carry on the tradition of welcoming the Beaujolais Nouveau each November. Hosted by the French American Chamber of Commerce of LA, the night featured gourmet food from local vendors and premium wines, casino gaming, live music (PATJE shined, as always) and dancing. Also featured: a spectacular silent auction with abstract and modern art (even Picasso), gift baskets, plus entertainment, dining and recreational items. Guests opting to buy tickets for the exclusive VIP Lounge were treated to champagne and cognac in addition to the food and wine experience. A splendid time was had by all. -Don Rose
BEST BUY LAUNCH PARTY FOR SONY PLAYSTATION 3: What a bash. It had everything The LA Report likes: tons of fun activities (games games and more games -- you could go from being a Guitar Hero to a hoops star to a combat veteran), wildlooking women in alienish silver space costumes (I figured they were auditioning for a new game -- Captain Kirk's Fantasy of Conquests), great entertainment (Camp Freddy with special drop-in guests like Slash and Mark McGrath), great food and drink in ample quantities (even Marie Callenders pies and Jamba Juice), fun giveaways (T-shirts for MI3, magazines from BPM, Vapors and Dub, new Blu-Ray DVDs of The Last Samurai and Training Day, and Guitar Hero T-shirts, and Sega T-shirts), and also (did I mention T-shirts?) stars like Jason "Costanza" Alexander (I wonder if he hates when writers do that), John Salley, Jenna Jameson, Kevin Dillon, Rick Shroeder and many others. Others who included two sassy stewardesses, Kim and Andrea from Alaska Airlines -- ok, not stars, but they do fly among the stars, and besides, they were vivacious (va va voom!). And you know, I have been meaning to finish my writeup on new airlines to try, so book me, baby! Favorite party moment: Camp Freddy rocking out on the Doors' "Roadhouse" with singer Scott Weiland wailing and Slash soloing, as gamers' thumbs numbed in record numbers all around me. Rockstars, games, women, grub, booze, Best Buy next door -- if 13 to 25 year olds could design Heaven, would this not be it? Speaking of Best Buy next door, it really was; we walked by hundreds of camped out diehards waiting for the chance to buy a PS3. Either to enjoy, or perhaps to flip for fast funds (rumors were flying that online eBay sales are fetching two to three grand each). We partygoers had a handful of chances to buy one without a wait, thanks to a silent auction; these units had bids of around $1200-1700 last we checked. For those Best Buyhards who camped out but didn't get one, well... at least you got Camp Freddy. -Don Rose
ZUNE LAUNCH PARTY at the ROXY: Your mission, Mr. Music Maven, is to find out where Zune launch party is and obtain proper entry materials. It was almost a Mission Impossible. First there were the instructions, at zune.net : meet on Friday at set time and location to get dogtags with bar code on back. Then, punch in said bar code Monday at set time to see invite with party location and time. Bring dogtags and self to party for great musical night. Hey, it worked! I'm in! I noticed that the band set to play wasn't even shown on the invite, nor was it on the Roxy marquee. I, however, already knew the scoop, shown on another part of zune.net , but I can see why the marquee was so vague: it might have caused a riot had all of LA found out that inside were... the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS! I was surprised that the Roxy was the venue; I expected a larger space would be needed. But then I realized: this is Microsoft, and hence it was a well run event, disciplined, no madhouse at the door, a very orderly line slowly getting in as dogtags were closely checked. It was worth the wait. Sure, the tech geek in me had hoped for Zune stations to try out the player before the show, but hey, I can do all that later. This night was about fun, to celebrate the Nov 14 debut of the Zune music-video player (with photo viewer, FM radio, tune sharing via wireless, and more). Microsoft had already thrown other pre pre events where the player was the star -- this night was about the MUSIC, pure and simple. And it was Heaven, as we all realized we may never get to hear the Peppers again in such a warm cozy venue. Celeb factor? Well, I did spot Heath Ledger in a back booth enjoying the party, but this soiree wasn't about celebs, it was about music fans and select musicloving VIPs (who got to enjoy the OnTheRox space upstairs). All enjoyed the four hour open bar as RHCP played a tight one-hour set that combined new album songs with their classic hits and faves. It was a fun vibe; the Peppers even worked in a little Clash action ("London Calling"). Parting gifts? Yes: guests received a cool music package: 2 compilation CDs of Zuneworthy tunes, and 2 records (you know, that old school vinyl stuff), in a protective box. Kudos to Gates and Co for a great event. Check our Tech section for an upcoming review of the Zune media player, coming Zune to The LA Report. -Don Rose
The Doors Take Sunset Strip -- Again! All 3 surviving members were there Nov.8. Book Soup was the site of a signing (of a new huge book, "The Doors by the Doors") and a reading of Jim Morrison poetry by Perry Ferrell. The Whisky a Go Go held a VIP reception, a live set, and a plaque unveiling to honor the club with comments by Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek and Ben-Fong Torres, legendary Rolling Stone rock journalist. At one point, Ray and Doors guitarist Robby Krieger were signing books simultaneously: Robby at the Whisky, Ray next door at the Cat Club -- where the lucky ones who got in saw a mini version of the Doors exhibit set to open at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. But don't fret, Doors lovers; the head of the exhibit told The LA Report he hopes to get a full traveling version of the items on the road at some point, including LA. Items we saw included Ray's original organ, Robby's guitar, and rare writings Jim wrote as a (not so wild) child, including a touching thank you note to his mom. Other stuff: a Morrison report card, and a document with the chilling title, Report on the Death of an American Citizen. -Don Rose
It may have been the most fun party LACMA has ever thrown. What was it? "LOOKS TO DIE FOR: The 3rd Annual LACMA Muse Costume Ball 2006," which took place October 28, a pre-Halloween bash that celebrated the chic and the chilling, on a chilly night of fright. The food was good, with mini roastbeef sandwiches and other edibles. Innovative videos danced on the outer walls of the museum, as revelers danced below. Sure, the free drinks meant long lines, but it actually helped you to admire all the cool costumes on line, which included Marilyn Monroe with a female Joltin Joe at her side, Marie Antoinette (POST-headchop, I might add, scar still visible, perhaps reattached by Salvador DALI, who was standing nearby), and of course, yours truly, as GARTH from Wayne's World. I never had so many requests for photos in my life; methinks this bodes well for a Wayne's World sequel sequel. (My costume made for an easy dating-candidate age test: if a gal I was talking to didn't know who I was, they were too young.) TARGET was even there with touchup booths, where you could put finishing touches on your costume, or touch up makeup, and walk away with a free goodie bag of nice samples. So... Kudos, LACMA. Great fun was had by all. Don't miss 2007! -Don Rose
Niki Shadrow's post-FashionShow party at Les Deux (celebrating Candace Held's Smashbox show during LA Fashion Week) was a smash success on Oct 16th. Packed house, inside and out, and The LA Report had never seen such a steady stream of superlative passed food (edibles provided by nearby Geisha House -- lightly fried shrimp, rice balls, salmon on a stick (not as cheesy as it sounds - in fact, no cheese at all)), and passed beverages (Peroni Beer). One of the "passers" was actress Gia Natale, who is in one of the Friday films - "The Special Dead" - showing at the Arclight (11pm, $11) as part of the annual Hollywood Film Festival now underway. The magazine Niki writes for, Hollywood Covered, was available at the tables, always a fun read (one tip inside: tan fat looks better than white fat). The crowd was hip, hot and haute -- and friendly. Don't ever miss a Niki event, they are always fab!
It could have been a reality show of its own, called THE 2007 SEXIEST MEN AND WOMEN OF REALITY TV CALENDAR LAUNCH PARTY. Tons of former and current stars came out to a hilltop house in the Bel Airish part of Sherman Oaks to party hearty into the wee hours. Because? Well, because of the cause, for a start; door proceeds went to charity. And because a bona fide Rockstar (as in Supernova) was in the house (Adam Berns's house, to be exact) performing songs with an intimate vibe. And because there were drinks galore, attractive folks to converse with, a spectacular view -- and hey, where else could I have met a coupla Average Joes, Austin Carroll from The One, Beth Stolarczyk from The Real World (co-host of this bash, along with Alex Quinn of Filthy Rich Cattle Drive)... and Lesa Amoore -- no reality show yet, she said, but this former Vogue covergirl sure has the look, humor, style and pizazz for it. Come on, you producers out there, do I have to spell it out for ya? Okay, I will: how about Lesa is Amoore -- now THERE's a title viewers can fall in amour with. (Special thanks to Rousso Fisher PR for a most excellent event. Note: the cool calendars can be purchased at www.realitytvstuff.com) -Don Rose
The LA FEMME Film Festival recently wrapped in Beverly Hills; run by Leslie LaPage, it brought hundreds of filmmakers and fans together for films, parties and awards. Pioneering director SUSAN SEIDELMAN received a special achievement award on closing night, telling the packed audience at the Fine Arts Theatre that no one would fund her first film, so she went out and did it herself - good advice for any creative person, male or female, who wants to make it when others cannot see your vision. La Femme's parties were lively and well-attended; there was a fab fete on the roof of Luxe Hotel on Rodeo, a benefit show for UCLA Cancer Center at the Wilshire Theatre, and a closing bash at Indian eatery/bar Nirvana. And all were raving about the great giftbags (chock full of edible goodies, certificates, books - like Arianna Huffington's guide to being Fearless - and more) provided by It's In The Bag. -Don Rose
presented its 9th annual FRESH FACES IN FASHION show Oct 13th, kicking off Fashion Week LA. Celebs like Tracy "Baywatch" Bingham and Macy Gray joined about a thousand others for this annual tradition. The pre-Reception featured a plethora of beauties and fashionistas mingling among press, celebs and designers in the huge Barkar Hangar; several bars kept the libations flowing, including a new softdrink called BAWLS that is clear and, said one server, features "extra caffeine". Then came the amazing Runway Show, featuring bathing suits on gals to casual suits on guys to everything in between. Installations included items from Jack Rabbit, and Blackberry was there touting its sleek new PEARL cellphone, which features every feature you'd ever want (camera with flash, media player, trackball "pearl" for navigating, and more). All in all, another amazing Gen Art event; The LA Report gives its highest rating for 2007. Thanks to Evolutionary Media Group PR for their assistance. -Don Rose
TU CIUDAD magazine and BMW hosted a "Hip Hot" happening at hot LA eatery bar THE LODGE on Oct 11. Revelers included the coverboy of the latest issue, comedian CARLOS MENCIA (the "Mind of Mencia" TV star is seen above, photo'd by 944 MAGAZINE - also known for throwing great events, including several at the now-on FASHION WEEK LA). Guests enjoyed sangria and other libations, plus perfect passed appetizers including salmon, filet mignon, chicken, and much more. The friendly crowd included a Felicity (not desperate, not a housewife) and a Destiny (vocalist) - two names I have never met at one party before. The BMW's out front were stunning; the 335i and X3 got everyone's attention. Special thanks to Rousso Fisher PR, who got a great turnout on humpday - no easy feat in the City of Infinite Things To Do. -Don Rose
The fourth Annual TV DVD conference, put on by Home Media Retailing, was fun and enlightening as always. Oct 6 saw the debut of their new HI DEF day. The awards on Oct 4, hosted by blonde beauty Charlene Tilton (that dynamite Dallas doll is still stunning), saw Best In Show honors going to the DVD boxset "SEINFELD: SEASON 5 and 6". (Good news announced at the show: "Seinfeld Season 7", with the Soup Nazi episode and much much more, should be out in November). --The LA Report highly recommends TV DVD for '07. Packed days of great panels, luncheons and networking opportunities.
On Sep. 30, the Junior League of Los Angeles presented STARLIGHT ARCADE, on Sony Studios' Main Street.
Guests enjoyed arcade-style games (the air hockey and putting were popular), plus food from top LA eateries like Minx (what crabcakes!) and El Cholo (what tamales and rice!), an abundance of Absolut™ beverages, a silent auction, art from Andrew Weiss Gallery, a cigar lounge, a jumpin' jazz band, even a billiards tournament. VIP ticketbuyers were able to come two hours early for a special reception and a professional billiards demonstration in the Rita Hayworth Lounge. The LA Report especially enjoyed the wine booths where Gallo showed off several of their 70-plus brands of vino (their bubbly knowledgeable reps told me Gallo is so well known because they were first to bring wine to the masses right after Prohibition ended). Got to try Blisscotti ice cream sandwiches; yum! Also popular was the Xenii booth (their exclusive parties are the talk of LA, and require paid Xenii memberships -- but are worth it, as their recent Janet Jackson event proved). Proceeds from Starlight Arcade benefited local community partners supported by the Junior League of LA. For more information on JLLA and their future events, visit www.jlla.org --Don Rose
Byron Allen's Entertainment Studios know how to throw a good premiere party. It took place Sep. 25 at Sunset-Gower Studios, in honor of his new syndicated series COMICS UNLEASHED - each show featuring a panel of comics (from the well established to the legendary) sitting and talking comedically on topics offered by host Allen. Think of it as "Politically Incorrect" without the mandate to be political; it must be a freeing format for guests, who have included Brad Garrett (star of the new Fox marriage comedy "Til Death"), Carol Leifer (talented standup and "Seinfeld" writer), George Wallace (the black, alive, very funny George Wallace, that is), David Brenner, Kevin Pollak, Howie "Deal or No Deal" Mandel, Tommy Davidson, Pauly Shore and many more. Celebs in attendance at the launch party included comedienne Judy Tenuta, who also was a guest on one of the shows (I have always been a follower of Judyism); Mary Carey (one time gubernatorial candidate); Kent Emmons (who runs a new National Lampoon comedy channel on XM satellite radio that will launch on October 1st, channel 154); and of course the man of the hour, Byron himself, always amiable, greeting all his guests with charm and warmth. The food was spectacular; several long buffets filled with gourmet dishes ranging from salmon sushi to orange chicken, pad thai noodles, chinese cole slaw, brownies in what seemed like a dozen varieties. And the friendly lively crowd had a great variety as well; within two hours I had chatted with comedy execs, PR people, press, talent managers, comedians, a lawyer and at least two satellite radio hosts (the other being the lovely Taylor Wane, who has a show on Playboy Radio). Thanks to BWR PR for their assistance on this excellent event. -Don Rose
PRIMA NOTTE on Sep. 21 was another smash success; the gala event kicked off the Precious Cheese FEAST OF SAN GENNARO. Hundreds of people, including celebs Ray Romano, Anthony Michael Hall, Adam Carolla, Tina Hillstrom (a.k.a. Tina O, whose new comedy show coming to TV is creating quite a buzz) and Jimmy Kimmel (pictured here), packed the mock Italian street (hey, it IS Hollywood, after all), designed to make you feel like you were in New York's Little Italy. And it worked - there was the great food (pizza, pasta, calzone, biscotti, gelato and more, at top notch booths like Rocco's, Tanino's Restaurant (a Westwood fave), Il Pastaio, Piccolo Paradiso, Brooklyn Feast and Tuscan Grilled Chicken), the aromas, and an authentic roving Italian circus. In addition to all the fun, food and festiveness, Doug DeLuca (who helped create this annual event) accepted a check from sponsor PRECIOUS CHEESE for $75,000 on behalf of the San Gennaro Foundation (a charitable organization that helps the less fortunate, primarily children and the homeless). Other favorite booths: Elisabetta ROGIANI, who always amazes with her fashion shows, and the El Capitan Theatre, where The Nightmare Before Christmas is coming soon, in 3-D! The El Capitan always does great live shows and exhibits with their films, and get high marks from The LA Report for family fun. Feast Location: 1 block S. of Hollywood Blvd at Highland - behind the El Capitan and the building where Kimmel (one of the main guys behind this event, along with Carolla and DeLuca) tapes his show. SEP 16-17: LA WINE FEST 2006 benefited LA Shanti, YMCA and Hollywood Heritage - and took place at Vanguard Hollywood. Along with an abundance of great wine and food, there were several seminars over two full days, something that made this fest truly unique in Los Angeles -- kudos to the main force behind the event, the co-organizer and President of LAWINEFEST, Inc., Joel M. Fisher, PhD. Also involved was Adam Leemon, co-host of a radio show called The Tasting Room with Tom Leykis. The LA Report found the fest to be well run, with a very enjoyable crowd and knowledgable wine booths at every turn. Dozens of top wineries poured for six hours on Saturday and the same on Sunday, longer than any other wine events in recent memory; in addition, excellent eateries sold hot food (and the Fonda Music Box booth served desserts) to soak up the vino. On the unique beverage front, we loved the Almond Champagne, and the chocolatey wine they mixed with it (a concoction dubbed "Almond Joy"). Side note: the AMEX credit card called IN:LA (which provides many LA perks) was also at the Fest, signing people up at a booth on the outdoor patio -- an area that provided a relaxing place to chat with friends over wine notes in-between tastings and seminars. An excellent time was had by all. Make sure you attend in 2007. Info: www.lawinefest.com
SEP 16: the AMERICAN WINE AND FOOD FESTIVAL took place at Universal Studios, benefiting Meals on Wheels. The LA Report was impressed with every aspect of this annual soiree -- even the ride to the entrance, where guests enjoyed a mini, unofficial version of the Universal Studios backlot tour. Celebs in attendance included the star of Crossing Jordan (which is taped at Universal) and, of course, chef Wolfgang Puck, who amiably greeted guests. VISA SIGNATURE had a popular booth, where cardholders could get a nice candle as a gift. We were dazzled at the sheer number of booths, featuring top notch food and beverages of every stripe (even cooking demos). Some of our favorites: Baileys (in original, Chocolate Mint, or Caramel), Teas' Tea (with a great slogan, "Drink for your self"), and Wakiya (Asian dishes that caused long lines but was worth the wait -- superb soup!). Also popular: the late-night lounge, which gave guests a place to chill, enjoy perfect Puck pastries as well as a DJ and more drinkable delights. The range and quality of the silent auction was also stellar. All in all, an excellent evening, not to be missed next year; one of The LA Report's Top Ten annual events. SEP 17: TASTE OF SANTA MONICA - the annual festive food fete - took place at Santa Monica Pier on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, and once again featured dozens of food and beverage booths enjoyed by a lively crowd. A rockin' band kept the vibe jovial, as did live cooking demos (featuring Santa Monica's own Art Institute, which has a great culinary school) and a wine garden for VIPs. Hard to pick favorite booths, but we loved Panini Garden, Hooters (women and wings, wow!), Il Fornaio (boffo bread!), Stefano's New York Pizza (real NY taste), The Lobster, Rusty's and Bubba Gump Shrimp (located right on the SM Pier!), and Famina (their stores are great, like upscale 7-Elevens). The Longest Line award went to Acadie (crepes to die for). The LA Report gives our highest recommendation for next year, don't miss it. www.tasteofsantamonica.com
The packed launch party for new magazine Hollywood COVERED (an affiliate of Brentwood Media Group) was one of the best events ever at FALCON. Celebs who came out included cover boy Adam "took over Stern's slot" Carolla, Crispin "always dapper" Glover, me, Nick Cannon, Byron Allen - and one of the editors of the new mag, NIKI SHADROW, who was celebrating her birthday. I got to meet a top dog at THE ONION, my favorite satirical paper, so the night was complete. A recent Onion story featured a parasite expressing regret for choosing Adam as its host; did I ask Adam for his reaction to such skewering and funpoking? The journalist in me wanted to, but my party side was too busy enjoying the passed appetizers, delish desserts (like Lickety Split frozen custard) and cuties in every corner of the club. Even GetFlipped was there, making 3D photos of anyone who wanted one. Thanks to Landers PR for another supercool event. -Don Rose
The Western Foodservice & Hospitality Expo ran Aug 26-28 at the L.A. Convention Center; its huge turnout proved once again this is an annual must-see for the West Coast food & hospitality industry. Highlights: several booths serving mock-meat dishes with very tasty vegetarian ingredients (VegeMaster and Gardein - garden protein, get it?), Gordon Biersch beer, and hundreds of other booths with food, wine, beer, soups, soft drinks (SOBE's LEAN drink rocks!), and products for restaurants (including a cool plastic doohickey that lets you open doors with your FOOT, to keep hands sanitary - great idea). -D.R.
The LA Report also enjoyed the inaugural Los Angeles Wine & Food Festival, co-located in Kentia Hall: over 100 wineries and gourmet food companies featured fine wines, premium delicacies and luxury accessories to trade professionals and the general public. And celeb chefs wowed the crowd with demos, including Tommy Tang and Cat Cora (pictured here). My fave booths included one for a new book called DRINKtionary (The LA Report loves self-explanatory catchy titles!), Dooley's Toffee liqueur (lovers of Baileys or Kahlua should love this), mint water, Pistachios, The San Francisco Chocolate Factory, a Cigar rolling booth sponsored by PAYNE-MASON, and assorted gourmet food tastings featuring appetizers, candy and chocolates, cheeses, coffee, tea, nuts, oils, seafood and sauces and spreads, and more . The kickoff party was also stellar, and included great food from Tam O'Shanter (an LA institution), amazing tortilla soup from, yes, El Pollo Loco (who knew this fast food fave made A-plus soup?), refreshing Fiji Water and more. Finally, the CRA Hall of Fame dinner was delightful, with beef and lobster and Hollywood celeb lookalikes entertaining the attendees who came to honor restaurant award winners in several categories. Take The LA Report's advice: GO in '07! -D.R.
That's EMMYtainment - Sweet Swag Suites: Aug. 23 to 25, The LA Report did a three-spree: Hearts of Fire suite, PLATINUM Lounge and an ECO Lounge. (With the plethora of product tie-ins and promotion in the Land of the Emmy Freeby, when will M&M release EMMYnems?) First, Hearts of Fire at the Peninsula Hotel: an intimate room downstairs welcomed visitors with pampering - the 3 Main M's: massage, makeup and mane (aka hair styling) - and gifts that ranged from Poison CDs ("rock" being part of the Diamonds theme) to very cute and colorful LeSportsac bags to boxes of Godiva chocolates (yum); top celebs were fortunate enough to directly experience the actual Hearts of Fire diamonds, the true star of this Emmy suite.
Next, Melanie Segal's PLATINUM Lounge at Le Meridien hotel, which featured fine wines and fab fruit as you walked in, with waves of piano tunes wafting in the air as an array of cuties, celebs and media ambled about the booths -- which included superstylish Chip and Pepper jeans, Coby electronics (showcasing their small sleek Mp3 players - so popular they ran out before The LA Report arrived, but look for reviews soon in our Tech Check section), a new spiffily-designed Dirt Devil KONE porta-vac (a cone-shaped beauty that sits upright as you remove the upper portion - the vac - from the lower part - the charging base), Paris Hilton perfume and travel bags, a really cool solar-powered cellphone charger (also for laptops!), Bed Head products (always a femme fave), a cleansing supplement, anti-aging and hair enhancing systems, and even a separate room with oxygen chambers, manicures and massages to enjoy.
But wait, there's more - as in one more sweet suite, the Ultimate Green Room ECO Living Lounge that Landers PR (known for throwing excellent environmentally-themed events) put on upstairs at the W in Westwood. Wow! What a vibe. Sure, there were those 3 M's -- massage (Green Bliss Eco Spa), manicure, and mane (Pureology - a firm specializing in color-protecting hair products - made The LA Report's head scribe look sleeker, thanks to stylist O'Neal). More? Okay: healthy veggie food from the W's Nine Thirty restaurant (terrif tofu, wraps, salad, vegetables) that I enjoyed elbow-to-elbow with "24" star Jean Smart and about 24x24 others - the smart set that packed the party space, which even featured eco-designed furniture! I'm not done: the Art of Tea was also a hit, as was the H2OM water (with Intention!)...
the pedicures, healings (by Debra King), readings and energy cleansings... Linda Loudermilk's eco-conscious clothes and jewelry... vegan gal (vegal?) shoes called Mink (they plan men's soon)... Lavera skincare... face time with Jane Iredale Cosmetics... Natural High clothes (shirts, pants, sweatshirts made from blends that use hemp and bamboo)... Yoga Works certificates... Mod Mix organic cocktails... the VISA Enlightenment Card... and a gifts-and-getaway raffle raising funds for CHEC (Children’s Health Environmental Coalition) and The Blue Butterfly Campaign (bluebutterfly.org). Overall, yes I'll say it, it was the mellowest grooviest "Good Vibrations" of all the pre-Emmy suites. Speaking of Good Vibrations, Capitol includes this smash song on the new PET SOUNDS 40th anniversary disc, now out. See how I worked that in? No mind-limiting boundaries for THIS writer! (Special thanks to The Lippin Group, Platinum PR and Landers PR for their assistance on the Peninsula, Le Meridien and W pre-Emmy events, respectively.) -Don Rose
Aug. 17: IGNITE!, Gen Art's annual summer bash at the Henry Fonda Theater, was just as exciting and fun-filled as last year, and maybe even more crowded - all 3 floors plus the outside ground floor area were packed with partiers. This third annual extravaganza last five hours, which was good, since there was so much to do! Great music (including beats by DJ Michelle Pesce), dancing, casino action, drinking (hosted drinks galore), Lickety Split ice cream in vanilla, chocolate and mint, swimsuit modelling on the roof (in a little mock pool no less!), massages courtesy of Bliss (which is located at the W hotel in Westwood for your post-party pampering), short films, giftbags for VIPs -- I mean, what didn't this event have? Also outstanding was the eclectic array of local and international artists featured in the lobby and an adjacent lounging room. Even COKE was in the house, giving out bottles of its new Coke Blak; imagine mixing Coke with a little coffee and you get the taste. For the coolest new talents in film, art, performance art and fashion - visual art, photography, multi-media, installation art, and non-traditional fashion - you really need to know about Gen Art. Become a part of it: to find out more about this organization, and their continued commitment to the growth of independent and spirited West Coast talent, visit genart.org.
Aug. 16: ISES Joint Allied Mixer. Event planners meet, mingle and munch at this annual schmooze extravaganza, and this year's - at the Petersen - was a lotta fun along with great networking. Always nice people and interesting exhibit booths related to the events industry - including House of Blues, Ron Rubin (celeb lookalikes and great bands for hire), a service to take 3D photos (lenticular style), and too many more to mention them all! Somehow ISES was able to jam them all in for this year's JAM.
Aug. 16: VISION FEST - the annual screening, awards and party put on by one of The LA Report's favorite groups, FILMMAKERS ALLIANCE - was awesome as always. FA is an LA treasure, a great organization, which helps filmmakers meet and assist each other to get projects done. FA offers invaluable knowledge, contacts and fun. (The FA film "Transaction" was one of our highlights from this year's LA Film Festival). And fun was the operative word at this annual bash at the Directors Guild; hundreds watched the talented celluloid on display, then partook of several food buffet stations and hosted bar. Exhibits to visit included one by SmartSound, a cool company that sells software to make film scoring much more intuitive, and fast - starting at a mere $199. The other cool exhibit: a company selling an electric scooter for around 300 bucks that plugs into any outlet; much cheaper than a Segway.
Aug. 16: DisplaySearch 4th Annual HDTV Conference: The Future of Television was in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton hotel. It was a High Def jam!
Aug. 12: Hundreds of LA new-agers, hippies, hipsters and "Bleepies" attended BLEEPfest at California Science Center, inside the cavernous Annenberg atrium. The film "What the Bleep Do We Know" has become a pop physics phenomenon, spawning a cottage industry - including a new 3-disc DVD, a book, a CD-ROM, a spiritual CD soundtrack and now BLEEPfest. Why the fuss? "What the Bleep" talks about theories of the profound, explaining and dramatizing the nature of our physical world, especially unseen realms - striving to give viewers a greater understanding of the world around them, while arousing a sense of wonder we sorely need more of today. In short, it makes science topics fun and makes you want to learn more. The film made co-star Fred Alan Wolf the rock star of quantum physics; Bleepies came in droves today to see, hear and talk to him live. The performances were also first rate; Lili Haydn - violin virtuoso and vocalist - was the BLEEPfest headliner, and wowed the crowd. -Don Rose, Editor, The LA Report
Aug. 7-9, EMX (Entertainment Media Expo), the annual trade show and conference, was fun and informative as always. From movies to music to video games to all forms of packaging entertainment, EMX brought the top minds in the field together at the Universal Hilton. The highlight was the DVD AWARDS, again hosted by famed film critic Leonard Maltin. After a delightful reception featuring gourmet food and hosted bar, Maltin presided over a wide range of awards, with Best Of Show going to KING KONG: COLLECTORS EDITION (the 1933 classic), from Warner Home Video. July 30: PLAY REVIEW by Don Rose: THE GOD OF HELL at the Geffen Playhouse. Author: Sam Shepard, Director: Jason Alexander. There has been much controversy in science circles recently, regarding whether Pluto is really a planet or not. Of course, Pluto doesn't care, it just is, but we humans always love to put things in a neat box of classification, and the fact that Pluto might be demoted to a mere comet is upsetting a lot of people. But there is one thing for sure, as a matter of fact, and that is that Pluto is what Plutonium is named after, and Pluto was the God of Hell, from which this play's title stems. And contamination by Plutonium is one of the predicaments affecting characters in this play - perhaps a metaphor for our nation becoming contaminated by a mutated form of Patriotism that is an effective cover for eroding people's rights and putting us all into neat little controllable boxes, in the name of Security and Safety. Is this Sam Shepard's point? Perhaps partly. Some critics have taken him to task for making his message too obvious or heavyhanded, but that may in fact be part of his point, too; perhaps he feels we have become so dulled by a corporate-controlled media that more pungent, potent points are now needed - and even a dose of pyrotechnics. All of the above were present on this, the closing night of this play. In short, the play worked. Sure, one can make minor myopic criticisms at individual scenes or plot points, but my point is that the overall effect of the play rises above the sum of its parts, parts the Dead Sea of jaded audience hearts and makes you laugh and cry and think - separately and, at times, all at once. For me, the deep emotional imprints I will take away, what struck my gut most effectively, were the twisting of familiar patriotic symbols - visual and musical - into something so scary and dissonant. An American anthem normally so automatic in its feeling of warmth and Star Spangled goodness, as well as our beloved flag, became redefined by play's end, paradigm-shifted into emblems of evil. When the huge Stars and Stripes cascades down as a shredded shroud over the set at the very end, tears welled up out of nowhere. I didn't see it coming - my thinking side was blindsided - and that filled me with, yes, shock and awe. The "Bravo!"s and ovations from the audience made me realize I was not alone. MORE SCOOP: The acting was superb, especially Bryan Cranston as the lead - a fascinating fast-talking fascist fanatic named Welch. Cranston continues to ascend the ladder to the top of the acting chain, my pick to one day succeed Tom Hanks as the go-to guy for playing everything from Everyman to Evil Man. At the closing night afterparty, I asked Bryan what HIS reaction was to the play after he read it; I wanted to see if it was similar to mine, or others so moved by the play. He said his initial reaction was, "What the hell is this?" Perhaps some attendees thought this as well (one in fact told me this - that they didn't quite get it) -- and I can understand that, as there were many ideas and concepts being presented in rapid succession and some things were left ambiguous, probably on purpose given Shepard's mastery of craft, and perhaps to make the play more universal and likely to stand the test of time. But again, it is the overall subliminal impression that always lasts longest, and to me, that gut feeling I got was powerful enough to outweigh any potholes in plot or undotted i's that may have been present. So what IS the answer to "What the hell is 'The God Of Hell'?" Well.. maybe it's... Hell is in the Heartland... or, Hell hath no fury like a Totalitarian scorned... or, Why the hell do we have to put a play in a neat labelled box, anyway? I won't do it, I tell you! I am free to not label; it's a free country - at least for now. So, I say, no need to label possible-planet Pluto OR "The God of Hell". In both cases, the reality, the experiencing of their existence -- that is, SEEING THEM -- is what makes them matter. Doesn't matter what you call them. Maybe if we quit labelling everything - whether planets or people - we would all be a Hell of a lot better off.
Jul 29: McCabes hosted a special night with American treasure MORT SAHL. The LA Report loved his show a couple of months ago; we here in the City of Angels are lucky this true American original still performs often around town, at great intimate settings. Praise for Mort is plentiful: "... dazzling comedic gifts that age has not diminished. He remains a predator of the pompous and pretentious and an election year for him is like feeding time for a lion at the zoo." -Chicago Tribune; "...the so-called "rebel without a pause" blazed a trail for the political humorists of our time, the Dennis Millers, the Jon Stewarts, the Al Frankens, the Bill Mahers." -Chicago Sun Times. So, here's to Mort. He took an irreverent stand on the cutting edge of American social and political humor with his legendary appearances at San Francisco's famed "hungry i" in the early 1950s, refuses to slow down or soften his touch after nearly five decades of ruffling the feathers of the powerful and affluent and shaking a finger at their deeds. Sahl was the first humorist on the cover of "Time" magazine and the first non-musician to win a Grammy Award. His comments today are as incisive as ever. And, as he recounts in one hilarious anecdote, he changed Woody Allen's life! -D.R.
JUL 29: D.A.S.K. Productions presented their 19th Annual Summer Party at Paramount Studios. Event benefited P.S. I Love You Foundation (with a great silent auction, including sports items - can you say framed photo of golf's greatest, Palmer Nicklaus and Tiger?). Guests enjoyed bars at every turn, a spot-on U2 cover band, DJ, 1000 peeps and food carts all over the Streets of New York backlot that made you almost feel you were in the Big Apple; the sweaty weather added to the feeling, too - but I cooled off with great ice cream sandwiches (whoa, kid flashbacks). For info on FUTURE Dask events (Halloween and New Years parties), call Steve Dimon Presents (323) 874-0717.
JUL29: KITSON presented the launch of The "Girls Next Door" by Holly Madison - Jewelry line, available exclusively at Kitson. Celebs who came included the stars of E!’s hit reality series: GND's Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, Kendra Wilkinson -- and Hugh Hefner, natch. Plus: Kathy Griffin! See the new line now. (Thanks to Amplified PR.) -D.R.
JULY 21-28: These days, LA seems to have even more film festivals than fake faces, but here's one with genuine indie cred that always features some new discoveries: the annual DANCES WITH FILMS fest. DWF features films with mostly unknown and/or up and coming actors and directors (and just plain cool celluloid, like a doc about Visual Futurist Syd Mead). www.danceswithfilms.com
JUL 22: APLA's Summer Party at Paramount Studios was another smash success this year. Eventgoers enjoyed great food, cocktails, dancing, and an excellent silent auction with items such as airline trips and a Melissa Etheridge signed guitar (which started at an amazingly low $75, but soon got bid up to $3000) - as well as a Smirnoff taste testing area, casino gambling for a great cause, Naked Juice tasting, KBIG spinning tunes and broadcasting live, a Wells Fargo info booth with prizes, a chance to win a Mercedes Benz, and live performances from Deborah (it's so hard not to say Debbie) Gibson and Sugar Ray. Make your plans for next year, this is always an A-rated annual affair. -Don Rose
JUL 16: Attended a "Conversational Quickies" dating event. As in speed dating, there are several "rounds" where you meet new people by moving tables, but CQ features several improvements: (1) you can choose where to move to at each break (2) a new topic is introduced by host Julie Ferman for each "round", instantly giving you something provocative to discuss (3) there are 4 or 5 people per table to chat with each round, not just one, giving you more variety, and (4) you can chat with someone you like again in another round, just by moving to their table. Also, a pro photog takes your "dating mugshot" for you to use online later. The icing on the cake is Julie herself, who runs Cupid's Coach and created these events; she's funny, smart, and suggests intriguing topics. You will learn something, as well as have fun. The LA Report highly recommends this for singles. More info: www.cupidscoach.com . -D.R.
July 8: This year's annual Justice Ball was the best yet. I got to party with around 3000 people, mostly lawyers I was told but I saw all stripes, shapes and sizes on the dance floor, which rocked way past midnight! There was great DJ music, dancing and cocktails, yummy desserts for all, self serve coffee (where you could meet people, no lie, it was cool), and the gambling guys and gals played casino games for charity. Others bid on great silent auction items. And the best part of all: the fabulous GO-GOs played live! All five original members rocked the house; they look and sound just as good as in their heyday. (Fun fact: lead singer belinda sang barefoot, on a little area rug she could prance about on.) -D.R.
Jun 23: SAMSUNG and FIRST LOOK throw boffo bash for Greiner film at Museum of Television and Radio. more>>
Jun 2-4: HE2006: this Home Electronics consumer exhibition took over four floors of the Sheraton hotel near LAX to showcase the latest in home audio, home theater and convergence products and technologies. Attendees ranged from gear-heads to first time buyers; we got to preview and demo millions of dollars worth of components, including dozens of amazing killer speaker systems, as well as a plethora of high-end vinyl for sale and SACD's (Super Audio format, but playable on all players) to peruse and purchase. I liked the Sennheiser, Headroom, HP, Sony and XM Satellite Radio booths best. Headroom makes super-portable mini-amps to enhance the sound coming out of portable player (laptop/MP3) headphone jacks, as well as other products to make your headphone listening more pleasurable (and cool carrying cases); Sennheiser showed off some great headphones, like one model that collapses easily into a spiffy carrying case and features noise cancellation technology; Sony trumpeted the arrival of BLU RAY, the new HD format competing with HD DVD (Blu Ray titles and players rolling out this summer); and XM showed off hot MP3-style portable players that put hundreds of digital-quality ad-free XM stations in your pocket - and you can RECORD them with the units, too, a feature I love (PIONEER INNO was one player of note, another is made by SAMSUNG). Tickets to the HE show included free live music (I liked the jazz trio on Sunday), educational seminars, celebrity appearances (Efren/"Pedro" of "Napoleon Dynamite"), contests and more. On Jun 3, XM sponsored the ELF Benefit Concert featuring Dr. John. The concert included a live auction of audio and video equipment. The auction and concert proceeds will benefit the Elf Foundation, a non-profit charity that brings music and films to children experiencing extended stays in hospitals; www.elfsystems.org. More on the HE Show: www.he2006.com.
May 31 - Jun 1: DVD's NINE LIVES; many topics were the buzz of this conference, such as: which will win out, HD DVD or Blu Ray? The buzz I experienced seemed to lean toward HD DVD and I concur with that opinion (the name alone is a big plus, since with Blu Ray, consumers will often have to ask "what is that?" whereas HD DVD pretty much summarizes what it is; also, HD DVD is first to market). I also enjoyed the Guerilla Marketing panel, which included studio reps as well as a wonderful inspired choice for panelist, a sci-fi writer, who gave a thought provoking verbal glimpse into the potential future of digital entertainment during the next decade (take note, marketers, this futurist said that tech changes/advances tend to double in speed every few years, so you have to react ever faster to keep up with new trends - hence, the conclusion I drew is to look forward more and look to what's hot now less - case in point: remember how hot Friendster was once, long ago (in Internet years), and how Myspace came out of nowhere to far eclipse it in buzz and numbers?). The luncheon keynoter from Disney made an interesting point about how a large number (approx 40 percent!) of HD TV owners have no HD source to watch - meaning that, as with many iPod owners, tech purchase decisions are often made in today's techtangled world so that one can be seen as hip, with it, and knowledgeable to peers and spouse - so perhaps "content is king" is not completely correct, "content and cool are king" is. A fun critics awards for best DVDs of 2005 was also part of the festivities at "DVD 9", with "THE INCREDIBLES" winning Best In Show and other awards (a fine Rhino DVD, "Concert for Bangladesh", won Best Music DVD honors; clips of it I have seen look and sound fantastic). All in all, it was another home run for DVD 9 producers Home Media Retailing; their always-excellent events about the current and future state of the DVD get The LA Report's highest rating. -Don Rose
MAY 25, "Killer Pad"'s Killer Party at Camden House. A wrap-party, wild and wooly, with a whirlpool of women and wine. Wow! All alliteration aside, it was a lively event. Amid the revelry I sat down with the director of "Killer Pad", Robert Englund (you know, Freddy Krueger's alter ego), who said the producer, Wayne Rice (producer of "Dude, Where's My Car?") had been after him for a long time to do a film, and so they did. "Killer Pad" is, according to Robert, due out either Halloween 06 (the natural choice) or Spring or Summer 07. Horror is hot, so this pic should do well, especially since it has a unique element to it: it is COMEDY-horror, yet not parody like Scary Movie. Mr. Englund said it is more like "Ghostbusters meets Abbott and Costello meets The Three Stooges", based on a hip script, with clever comedy amid the occasional scatological jokes (hey, how can you do a teen-marketed movie without those?). Robert said their target audience member is the teen who is almost old enough to get his driver's license; it is a "hard PG-13" film, pushing the edge. As for the party, photos from the filming were projected on the giant screen above the dance floor as a sea of svelte sexy sirens in short skirts skirted about to DJ tunes, mingling among celebs like Englund, film co-star Bobby Lee (always hilarious on "Mad TV"), Jon Lovitz, and that guy who co-stars in the upcoming "Nacho Libre", and Julie Sands, hot horror director who is working on a film adaptation of a Stephen King property. In summary, a fun bash, as I have come to expect from the always-packed Camden House. (Special thanks to Carolyn from Ineventions). -D.R.
"Killer Pad" is a horror/comedy that serves up a plate of laughs and scares. Plot: One of the most important milestones in every young man's life is the day he moves out of his parents house and into a place all his own. For best friends Doug, Craig & Brody, that day has arrived. Due to a settlement they collected after their dog, Ballsy, suffered a minor maiming accident, the boys bought a Killer Pad in the affluent hills of Hollywood. Little did they know the house has a history...
May 22, ASCAP POP MUSIC AWARDS AFTER-PARTY: boffo bash put on at the Bev Hills hotspot AQUA, by aLine Media in association with Item Magazine and Armani Exchange. Celebs in attendance included Mojo (reality TV star Melissa Jo Hunter, pictured here), former-governor-wannabe-and-adult-actress Mary (very curvy) Carey, Jane Linter (director of hot doc "Peace Love and Bikinis") and journalist/singer Kat Kramer (daughter of famed director Stanley Kramer). A raspberry concoction was the featured drink at the bar (very yummy), while tray-passed delectables included Kobe burgers with bacon and cheese (amazing), Portabello mushrooms stuffed with risotto, chicken skewers, and mini-donuts with chocolate dipping sauce. DJs spun a great mix, including The Kinks and The Who so guess who was happy (The LA Report, correct). Then there was the giant, um, cross between Speed Racer and a nerdy Franken-stein, controlled by a guy behind the hulking hulk-like mega puppet (named Bert, pictured here). Answer to the riddle: this is one character from a Gorillaz-like group called Otafuku Rex. More info on their website, www.myspace.com/otafukurex. (Thanks to aLine for another great event; Kenn, Alyssa, Heather, Kristi are fun and friendly and their parties are, too.) -Don Rose
May 18-22: BEVERLY HILLS CLASSIC Antiques, Fine Art and Jewelry Show at the Petersen Auto Museum, Wilshire at Fairfax. One of the best shows The LA Report has seen lately. Highlights: Bernard Pras (objects arranged to create one-of-a-kind photos of famous folks), Pavlos (unique works from colored paper); photomosaics by Robert Silvers; surreal paintings by Metin Bereketli, Michael Hall's thick-stroke paintings, and 2 perennial favorites of The LA Report: Patrick Hughes (visual illusionist extraordinaire) and Carol Feuerman (ultrareal people-sculptures). -Don Rose
