R.I.P. Charles Nelson Reilly

Charles Nelson Reilly (January 13, 1931 – May 25, 2007) was a Tony Award-winning American actor, director, and drama teacher known for his comedic roles in movies, children's television, animated cartoons, and as a panelist on the game show Match Game. Reilly made his first movie appearance in 1957, playing an uncredited role in the Elia Kazan film A Face in the Crowd. However, most of his work during this period was on the stage, as he appeared in many off-Broadway shows. His big Broadway break came in 1960 with a minor part in the hit Bye Bye Birdie. Reilly would go on to win a Tony Award for his performance in 1962's How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying[4] , and he was nominated for another Tony two years later, for his work as Cornelius Hackl in the Broadway production of Hello, Dolly!

While he kept active in Broadway shows, Reilly would soon become better known for his TV work. In 1965, he made regular appearances on The Steve Lawrence Show, which aired for a single season. From 1968 to 1970, he appeared as uptight "Claymore Gregg" on the television series The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, which also starred Hope Lange and Edward Mulhare, in which he was reunited with Hello, Dolly! Broadway co-star, Eileen Brennan on one episode.

In 1971, he appeared as the evil magician "Hoodoo" in Lidsville, a psychedelically flavored live-action children's program produced by Sid and Marty Krofft that aired on Saturday mornings on ABC. The show was about a boy who falls into a magician's hat and enters a magical world of hat people. It is through these roles, as well as his playing the titular role in Uncle Croc's Block, that Reilly's voice and mannerisms were embedded in a generation of young fans.

During the 1970s Reilly also appeared as a regular on The Dean Martin Show, and had multiple guest appearances on television series including McMillan and Wife, Here's Lucy, Laugh In, The Love Boat and Love, American Style and was also a frequent guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. During this time Reilly was perhaps best known as a fixture of game shows, primarily due to his appearances as a regular panelist on the television game show Match Game. Reilly was the longest running guest, and often engaged in petty arguments with fellow regular Brett Somers. Reilly typically offered sardonic commentary and peppered his answers with gay-themed double entendres that pushed the boundaries of 1970s television standards. From 1975-1976 Reilly starred in another live-action children's program called "Uncle Croc's Block" with Jonathan Harris. Reilly was often a guest celebrity in the 1984 game show Body Language, including one week with Lucille Ball and another week with Audrey Landers.

From 1980, Reilly was primarily active teaching acting and directing for television and theater. He directed episodes of the Evening Shade television series in 1990 and earned a 1997 Tony Award nomination as Best Director of a Play for working with longtime pal Julie Harris, opposite whom he had acted in Skyscraper, and whom he had directed in The Belle of Amherst and a revival of The Gin Game.

Reilly was a longtime teacher of acting at HB Studio, the acting studio created by Herbert Berghof and his wife, Uta Hagen. His acting students included Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler.

In the 1990s Reilly made guest appearances on The Drew Carey Show, The Larry Sanders Show, and most notably, as eccentric writer Jose Chung in the television series The X-Files ("Jose Chung's "From Outer Space"") and Millennium ("Jose Chung's Doomsday Defense"). Reilly was nominated for Emmy Awards in 1998 and 1999 for his performances in The Drew Carey Show and Millennium, respectively.

From the late 1990s, Reilly directed theater and opera, touring the country performing a critically acclaimed one man stage show chronicling his life called "Save It For the Stage: The Life of Reilly" and occasionally performing as the voice of "The Dirty Bubble" on the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. In 2006 his stage show was made into a feature film called The Life of Reilly.        (from CNR's Wikipedia page)

RIP JAMES BROWN

The Godfather of Soul died Christmas Day 2006 at age 73. Dawn Laureen shares her memories of spending time with The Hardest Working Man in Show Business.    (Special to The LA Report)

R.I.P. MIKE DOUGLAS

A few years ago, I pulled into a Bev Hills 76 station, and there was Mike, in another (longer) car, also getting gas. By coincidence, I happened to have a TV encyclopedia with me that I had just bought. I got out, met Mike, who was quite jovial, and he signed my book. Another coincidence: the place where he died, on 8-11-2006, was my teenage home, North Palm Beach Florida. I guess everything's connected. Give God a good guffaw, Mike.  -Don Rose

Doomsday clock reset for alarming world; global warming, nuclear perils shift symbolic hand

For the first time in five years, the elite board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is moving the minute hand on their Doomsday Clock closer to the fatal hour of midnight. "The most immediate hazard we face is also the most easily addressed, namely the thousands of nuclear-armed weapons aimed at Russia and the United States, and left pointlessly in a state of high alert.  The fact that they are is an appalling failure to step back from the brink." [--John Polanyi, nobel laureate]..."The major new step reflects growing concerns about a 'Second Nuclear Age' marked by grave threats, including: nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured nuclear materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing launch-ready status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons held by the U.S. and Russia, escalating terrorism and new pressure from climate change for expanded civilian nuclear power that could increase proliferation risks," said a statement released before a news conference today. JUST ANOTHER STEM CELL MIRACLE

Digital Village (KPFK 90.7 fm, Saturdays 10-11am) discussed a Wired story about a woman who, set to lose a leg to diabetes, underwent a treatment that involved using her own stem cells to restore circulation to the leg. It worked. The area healed and she kept her leg. Moral of the story? Why, of course there's only one conclusion: them stem cells be evil, bad, against God's will, and federal stem cell funding should continue to be banned. Isn't it obvious? Me scared of stem cells, me no understand how they work. Me prefer guns and tanks. And tanktops! Me red-blooded American!

NEIL ARMSTRONG GETS AN "A"

It's official, says one researcher, who has analyzed the original NASA tapes from the Apollo 11 moon landing, using sound software -- and, yes, the first man to stand on another world did indeed say the following: "This is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind ."  Science textbook editors have a lot of work now; first Pluto is demoted from full planet status, now a new "first footsteps line" from the Eagle has landed. Funny how no one ever quotes what second man on the moon Buzz Aldrin said when he descended the ladder, which to me was much more poetic: "This is one small step for a man, a man who is about to become the greatest second banana in history."

CELLING SAFETY

On Sept. 15, 2006, Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) announced its enthusiastic support of State Senator Joe Simitian's (D-Palo Alto) SB-1613, which will require California drivers who choose to use a cellphone while driving to use a hands-free device. The bill is scheduled to go into effect July 1, 2008. Palm, California's largest producer of cell phones, was the first cell manufacturer to publicly support the bill.  Ironic how, once this bill takes effect, one thing that can't touch your phone while driving is your palm. My advice to Palm: sell a device that holds a cellphone, with a built-in speaker, and call it the Palm-Free Palm Tree. Free advice, courtesy of The LA Report. (Hey, the advice was free. You get what you pay for.)

THIRSTy? then go to McDonalds for the best drink deal in town: 42 oz. in plastic cup, 69 cents. That's over 1 liter of liquid. (Who do they think they are, AM-PM?) Great for hot summer days.

THRILLIST has LAnded in LA.  The Manhattan mainstay for men mails you a daily e-list of essential stuff you need to do, and know. More info at: www.thrillist.com

Coming June 1: the new Landmark Theatre complex in the Westside Pavilion, next to Barnes and Noble. Tons of FREE parking, a big plus. Other cool consumeries: The Container Store has a great space at the Century City Mall.  A new H&M store recently had a grand opening event at Beverly Center.

LA's own Harry Shearer is garnering much attention for his new tome, "NOT ENOUGH INDIANS."  Rumor is his pal, director/actor Christopher Guest, expressed interest in making the book into a film. Just a rumor, but it would not come as a surprise, as they are two-thirds of The Folksmen and have a long history of working together. For more info on all things Harry: www.harryshearer.com . (Hear Harry Sundays 10 to 11am on one of The LA Report's favorite radio stations, KCRW 89.9fm; Shearer always delivers a funny and thought provoking mix - a Mighty Wind of wit and wisdom).

Hollywood is now home to the coolest music block in LA - centered around Guitar Center on Sunset. Just WEST of G.C. is the new MORRISON HOTEL GALLERY, which is opening in grand style on SEP 30 (see Events). Just EAST of Guitar Center is another space for great rock photos called the SHOOTING GALLERY; their recent party featured primo punk pix from Jenny Lens, and other ages of rock as well (Jimmy Page dancing to Dancing Days, George Harrison and Kermit hamming for the cam at SNL, and dozens more). Just east of that is the only Tuxedo-n-Tunes shop I've ever seen, home of ORPHANED CDs: very low used CD prices, a private patio to chill (you can sample CDs on portable headphones, nice touch), a great selection -- and yes, some terrific tuxes too.

REAL ESTATE, say the real astute, is really falling. Foreclosures are up. Sales are down. All signs say slowdown. Clue: sub-$200k condos, like this: 18307 BURBANK BL #237 Tarzana CA 91356, Apt-Style Condo, 1 Bed 1 Bath, 429 Sq Ft, $194,500. DROP: as of 9-2-2006: $189,500. DROP AGAIN: as of Sep.24: $175,000. Probably sold by now, but you get the point. Buyers market... for now.

THE ONION is available in kiosks all over LA. Funniest damn paper, period. Free. (Perhaps the Apocalypse isn't around the corner after all.)

SAVED: LA SHOW "Breakfast with the Beatles":  Chris Carter and his excellent BWTB is now safely set on the LA radio dial, every Sunday 9 am to noon, thanks to KLOS 95.5 fm. Congrats to Chris for all his success in making America's Longest Running Beatle Show as good as it gets.  My only regret is that LA FM radio seems to think Sunday morning is the ONLY time to play their great Beatle shows; K-RTH 101 plays 2 Fab shows (8am to 9, 9 to 10) while KCSN 88.5 airs Les Perry's Moptop merriment 10am to 2pm. Come on, radio programmers, man does not live on Sunday morning alone!

Another radio fave of The LA Report is the amazing show KLOS airs Sunday night - at 10pm - Little Steven's Underground Garage. The madcap mix of music, film/TV audio clippets, and Steven's impeccable commentary on the songs (as well as the history of pop culture) is one of the best shows ever on radio. It is really much more than just garage rock, although a healthy dose of it appears throughout each broadcast; it is two hours of pop-culture-plus-pop-music heaven.

Now, a plug for the show your humble editor appears on -- it's called RADIO PARALLAXHost Doug Everett mixes commentary, interviews with amazing guests (from newsmakers to icons like Walter Cronkite and radio legend Norman Corwin) as well as satirical interviews with "celebs" and characters (the VO for these mock guests is where yours truly comes in). More on the show here.

Who Killed The Electric Car?

Find out in this acclaimed documentary now out on DVD. (A recent LA WEEKLY cover story profiled one of the stars of the film, who is helping to resurrect the electric car. For more on electric cars, see our ECO page.)

TIP: Archer Farms makes amazing food and drink items: Chai Herbal Ice Tea, energy drinks that actually taste good, addictive Macadamia Nut cookies. Try them. (These items were featured in the 2006 LA Film Fest VIP lounge.)

Trini Lopez received the Ten Diamond award at the annual LA MUSIC AWARDS last November at Hollywood's Music Box Theatre. Sure, a gold record is great; that's for selling 500,000. You go platinum when you sell a million. Diamond is for 10 mil. Well, Trini has sold an astounding 100 MILLION records! Perhaps you've heard a little tune called "If I Had A Hammer"; that was Trini's smash hit. Congrats to Trini and all the winners at the LAMA bash. Other highlights: Amanda Mosher won Rock Single of the Year for “Mr. Madness,” and RED SUN's Native American Hip Hop wowed the hip audience.

APPRENTICE TAMMY HAS A BRAND NEW BAG:  Sturdy laptop bags, that is, in her new line, which features several styles and colors, fusing fashion sense with functionality. Beautiful inner lining, too. Created by Tammy Trenta of The Apprentice 5. The launch party took place at L.A.'s ultrahip Mondrian Hotel, attended by celebs like fellow Apprentice Theresa Boutross and, of course, The LA Report.

LA lore

KRTH 101 FM's Beatle show did an hour on the band's legendary Hollywood Bowl concerts, featuring interview clips with the concert promoter, Bob "Newlywed Game" Eubanks - then a top radio DJ, who mortgaged his home to raise the dough for the first show, $25,000, an unheard-of sum at the time.  Bob admitted that when the band first broke big, no one really knew what they had, how huge the phenomenon was. Beatle manager Brian Epstein, according to Bob, didn't let them have a second show that first year because, get this, Brian wasn't sure they would SELL OUT a second show! How could Brian not know that the first concert sold out in mere minutes? As Bob recalled, even Brian "didn't know what he had."

But the band did, at least as far as the musical limitations they had; they (and Apple Corps) argued against releasing the Bowl concerts in the UK, never allowed it on US vinyl till 1977, and now it's not in the official catalog. Making the show's airing of the live tunes, warts and all, all that more fun to hear. (More LA-Beatle lore: the Fabs once met Elvis at the King's Bel Air home; one can only hope a long lost tape surfaces one day of that event. In fact, to help find this tape, we at The LA Report are now offering its owner $25 in free gas for the tape, if it is proved to be authentic. You heard right, 25 bucks in free gas. Sure, it's only 25 bucks, but didn't you see the last part? It's FREE GAS, people. FREE GAS!) --Rod S. Neo

the fast LAne

Is LA's "20 minute rule" really true? Yes, you CAN get almost anywhere in LA in about 20 minutes or less, if there's no traffic. Example: May 25, 1 am, Westfield mall in Woodland Hills to Westwood/UCLA in 22 minutes at 65 mph max.

The LA Report's latest timesaver: to avoid traffic on Sunset, between Doheny and La Brea going east, use side streets south of Sunset. Take Cynthia to Larrabee, turn left up to Sunset, go right and immediately bear right on Holloway, pass La Cienega to Olive, go left and up the hill to Fountain, right on Fountain to La Brea.

Snopes.com says that the website Walken2008.com is a hoax. What a letdown. But hey, maybe it's all a ploy to build momentum -- and then, presto chango, Walken DOES announce, say on the Leno show, and he is off and running. Whatever the truth is, the site is frickin hilarious. Check it out: www.Walken2008.com

TUTU
one amazing night of celebration

Archbishop Desmond Tutu's 75th Birthday Party with Artists for a New South Africa raised over $600,000.  The donations received and all of the event’s proceeds are enabling ANSA to continue their work in South Africa and America on HIV/AIDS, voting rights, and the empowerment of youth, and are also providing much needed funds to Philani and Tygerberg, two of Tutu's favorite charities in Cape Town.

"The Official William Shatner space on MySpace!"

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA

SHATNER continues to climb in The LA Report's calculation of cool. His MySpace page proves he is perhaps the coolest 75 year old on the planet, but the most fun may be to read the comments people have written (or, in the case of one Asian hottie, ogle). There is also a pic of an original Trek series Enterprise ship (available with signatures from Bill AND Leonard Nimoy), lest you forget this is the actor formerly known as Captain Kirk. An Emmy in his 70's, a hot CD with Ben Folds, a hilarious roast on Comedy Central, now this page. His coolness quotient is, in our eyes, at Warp 11.

Napster.com is now "three free". Get THREE FREE LISTENS to ANY song (down from Five free before). Yep, they allow you free legal listening to over Two Million tracks. Party like it's 1999! (Small catch: after the first three free listens, you can't listen to that same song for free unless you pay a low-cost monthly fee - which includes unlimited listening to all 2million songs in their library - or you can buy songs a la carte for 99 cents each. This could be a boon to new artists; take their songs for a spin and see if you like them enough to buy. Napster's "part free, part fee" model is worth monitoring).

EMMY NIGHT was Kieferrific. Actor/winner Sutherland quipped that now he'll have to have dinner with dad Donald. Kiefer's show 24 was a winner, too; HBO was the overall total-Emmy-win winner. Ratings were described as tepid for the annual awards show, but still topped all the other crappy TV out there that Emmy voters have to choose from.

WE CAN'T WORK IT OUT

(aka Macca and the Mrs.)

We hear Heather turned down tens of millions from Sir Paul to settle their split sooner than later. We also hear that the once Mrs. Macca may be filming her divorce drama for a future reality show. LA's longest running Beatle show, BREAKFAST WITH THE BEATLES, reported that Paul just wanted a clean break, offering in the area of $60 mil, but apparently Heather declined. The moral in all this? Get a pre-nup! The LA Report wonders: is Macca thinking of Yesterday? Has he got Another Girl? Should he be For No One right now? Hope he's Getting Better. (The perfect girl to match his musical fame and wealth? Lady Madonna.)

SCOOP: Woody Allen movie. Not a real scoop, that's the title. I think it's his 983rd film. Somewhere around there. So this wouldn't be much of a scoop if it was one, would it? Woody, Scarlett J, Hugh J star.

ROCK 'n ROLL: Revived by rockers The HILLS. Keep an eye on these guys - and an ear; they recently rocked Republic on La Cienega at a superpacked VIP party where celebs such as Coolio stopped by to check them out; hear them here: http://www.myspace.com/stonefreetunes

GIRLS NEXT DOOR still fascinates on E!, taking viewers behind the gates of the Playboy Mansion and into the secret world of Hugh Hefner - Playboy's perpetually peppy pipe-'n-pajama prince. Leading lady Holly Madison, scholastic Bridget Marquardt and sports fanatic Kendra Wilkinson give us a look at life in the Mansion as only they can show it. In a recent episode, the girls helped Hef celebrate his 80th birthday -- talk about Star 80! -- but what do you get the man who really does have everything? (And: Is that a rabbit in his PJ's, or is he just glad to see ya brought some Viagra?)

Deal Or No Deal is actually quite a big deal: a #1 show with 18.9 million viewers. We all know the host, Howie Mandel, but who are those gals holding all the loot? Three of the Lovely models (briefcase girls) of the hit NBC show are: #10 - Anya Monzikova, #11 - Katie McCleary and #26 - Lindsay Clubine. Anya is of Russian descent and has been living in Los Angeles most of her life. Katie is from Chicago and Lindsay is from Kansas City. The women were recently voted three of People Magazine's 100 Most Beautiful People. Anya aspires to do film, while Lindsay wants to be a host of a show like Access Hollywood. Katie just wants to be on TV, anyhow, anywhere! They were hits on the red carpets of the Daytime Emmys and the Alma Awards this year.
